Excellencies, dear colleagues and friends,
I said earlier today at the plenary that the climate crisis is a health crisis. A sick planet produces sick people, and sick economies.
Conversely, investments in climate action deliver massive returns for the health of people and economies.
WHO’s investment case shows that five proven climate and health interventions would save 2 million lives each year, and every dollar invested delivers four in return.
Yet many Nationally Determined Contributions still overlook health, leaving money on the table.
Integrating health into NDCs and national adaptation plans ensures that climate action translates directly into healthier, more resilient communities and economies.
Under the Brazilian presidency, the Belém Health Action Plan and the COP30 Activation Agenda both recognize health as a foundation of human and social development.
They call for aligning climate and health financing mechanisms, unlocking resources for adaptation, and empowering local participation to ensure solutions are just and inclusive.
But while Parties have made good progress, health is still not part of formal UN climate change negotiations regarding adaptation and mitigation.
I call on you to take this last step.
Financing health adaptation is not a cost; it is an investment in our shared future.
There can be no healthy people on a sick planet.
Obrigado. Thank you.
