Overview and Assessment of Communicable Disease Surveillance Systems and Strategic Information Sources in the South-East Asia Region: Bangladesh Country report, 2023

Overview

This assessment was conducted as part of a regional WHO initiative to strengthen communicable disease surveillance and strategic information systems across South-East (SE) Asia. For Bangladesh, the primary aim was to systematically review and map the country’s communicable disease surveillance systems, evaluate their performance, and identify opportunities for integration and improvement. The assessment focused on a broad range of priority diseases – including tuberculosis (TB), HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, gonorrhoea, dengue, chikungunya, leishmaniasis, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, cholera, enteric fever, leptospirosis, scrub typhus, and acute encephalitis syndrome – within the context of national legal, policy and operational frameworks. The ultimate goal is to inform the development of a regional strategic framework for integrated, indicator-based surveillance and to support Bangladesh’s progress towards disease elimination and health security
